The Wait Before The End

I sat eating a ham sandwich
Worried a little but not terribly

Alone
Too far away to be of any help, consolation, or support
As her heart stopped that first time

A phone call - I needed to go
The trip - we flew to where she lay

Just waiting
Until we were all there
When she could travel to a better place
With no worries, sickness, or death
And leave us behind

We had to be there for each other
While she could not
To love one another as she left us

We were blind to her pain
Guilt now runs free
Like a river
Shifting and twisting over the contours that are me
